Sutherland Global Services (SGS) has launched a huge delivery center at the University of the West Indies, raising the prospects of creating more than 3,000 jobs in Jamaica. This is the largest foreign investment in the Caribbean island to date. The new center will serve clients across the world, becoming a major component of SGS’ global operations.

Jamaica’s investment promotion agency JAMPRO has claimed the credit for SGS’s significant expansion in the Caribbean country. In a press release, the agency has explained how it convinced the BPO firm of the outsourcing opportunities in Jamaica by engaging with its top officials at important outsourcing industry forums such as NASSCOM Conference, the IOAP Summit 2012 in Florida and Nearshore Nexus in New York.

Sutherland began its operation in Jamaica about a year ago at a small office in the University Campus, employing over 700 people, many of whom are UWI students. The BPO provider says it will recruit more university students as consultants in the new center.

“It is without a doubt that Sutherland Global has fallen in love with our country. From the onset when Mr. Kumar attended our Jamaica Investment Forum, he knew Jamaica would be the right fit and immediately got the ball rolling, spotting the talent and hiring country manager, Odetta Rockhead, before making a decision to invest. SGS likes to be innovators and were drawn to the larger talent pool in Kingston,” said Diane Edwards, President of JAMPRO. K.S Kumar is the Chief Operating Officer for SGS.

Headquartered in Rochester, N.Y., Sutherland has extensive operations in India’s southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala and employs over 30,000 professionals globally. Among its clients are Deutsche Bank, the largest foreign exchange dealer in the world, and Asia’s biggest low-fare airline, AirAsia.

“Sutherland’s is a game-changing investment for Jamaica,” described Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, adding that she would like to see the company expand beyond the borders of UWI to become a household name in Jamaica.
